Færgegården

The 'Færgegården' museum tells the tale of the Fjord Country from the Stone Age to 1900-industrialism.

FærgegårdenThe Fjord Country through 10,000 years is the title of an updated exhibition taking visitors on a historical tour of the area. The exhibition starts with the first signs of life by the fjord and moves on to local findings from the Bronze Age, Iron Age, Viking Age and Middle Ages.

One innovation is a model of Slangerup in ca. 1530 before the monastery and its chapel were demolished. This 1:50 scale model gives a striking impression of the way in which the monastery complex dominated the town.

The exhibition also portrays the lives of local farmers, fishermen and their families in the 1700’s and 1800’s. One section shows the history of Færgegården (Ferry Lodge) and life by the ferry in the same period. The exhibition finishes in two rooms which describe Frederikssund’s development over the past two centuries. One of the rooms focuses on the town in the 1800’s as a centre of trade and handicraft. One exhibit is the oldest known painting of Frederikssund, from 1857. The other room centres around the various industries of the 1900’s and work and leisure activities of the population.
