How did the Vikings live and work? Visit the Frederikssund Viking Settlement and find some answers.
The Viking Settlement is an outdoor 'museum' with free admission. Five pit houses and a long house have been built there, and a planked oak pathway leading out to a wooden jetty. Pit houses are small, dug-in houses with the floor below ground level. They were probably used by the Vikings as workshops or temporary dwellings.
Go inside the pit houses and see the fireplaces. You'll shudder when you see how little space people had.
If you are in Frederikssund at the beginning of July there is more Viking culture at the annual
Viking Play, performed on an open-air stage near the settlement. The Viking Play is a breathtaking spectacle for audiences of all ages.
