In wintertime the boat lies all wrapped-up in the old Frederikssund harbour. But when summer comes the old steamboat discards its overcoat and sets off down Roskilde Fjord. For 47 years Skjelskør connected Skælskør with the islands of Agersø and Omø until, in 1962, the route was closed down. The steamboat, one of Denmark’s last coal-burning passenger boats, was saved from the scrap yard when it was bought by the Danish Association for the Preservation of Old Ships. Today, the association still owns it. Since 1994, Skjelskør has had a permanent berth in Frederikssund. Every Sunday in the school holidays Skjelskør leaves Frederikssund harbour and sets off south. The trip lasts about an hour. Visitors of all ages are welcome to go down to the engine room and see the old steam engine in action. The timetable is on the steamboat’s website along with information about the boat and its history (only in Danish).
